Eritrea’s Geography

Eritrea is located in the northeastern part of Africa, bordered by Sudan to the west, Ethiopia to the south, Djibouti to the southeast, and the Red Sea to the northeast. It covers an area of approximately 117,600 square kilometers (45,400 square miles). Eritrea's geography is diverse, characterized by a combination of coastal plains, highlands, and arid lowlands.

Coastal Plains:

Along the eastern coastline, Eritrea has a narrow strip of low-lying plains that border the Red Sea. The coastal region is known for its beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and marine biodiversity.

Highlands:

Great Rift Valley:

Danakil Depression:

In the southeastern part of the country, Eritrea shares a portion of the Danakil Depression, which is a geological depression known for its extreme heat, salt flats, and volcanic activity. This region offers unique opportunities for geological exploration and adventure tourism.

Lowlands:

The western and northern parts of Eritrea are predominantly arid lowlands, part of the Sahara Desert's vast expanse. These areas are characterized by hot and dry climates, with sparse vegetation and nomadic pastoral communities.
